Making changes to the way we work to reduce our carbon footprint and create a brighter future for all of us
We are all too aware that what we do matters and looking after our planet is vital. At Buckinghamshire Building Society, we consider this an extension of our aim to work towards the ‘Greater Good’. By making a series of environmentally conscious choices, we are hoping to improve our sustainability and lessen our impact on the planet.
We are regularly revising our Climate Change Strategy to identify areas that we need to work on and determine how we will be able to do this. Currently, we are reducing our reliance upon paper. In the last few years, our paper usage has declined dramatically, although we’re aiming to reduce this even further by developing innovative ways to apply for our savings accounts that limit the number of printed forms we post out to our members. Similarly, we are ensuring that our marketing communications are available via email where possible, rather than sending them out through the post.
In recent months we have worked to reduce the quantity of our branded materials, such as notebooks and pens and the remaining products that we continue to purchase, are responsibly sourced and made from renewable resources, such as bamboo. Additionally, we’re making changes within our head office. By installing water refill stations throughout the premises, our staff have reduced their usage of single use, plastic bottles. We also have recycling points readily available, in convenient locations to encourage our staff to act responsibly. On the subject of waste, all of our IT waste gets disposed of in sustainable and environmentally responsible ways. We also run a volunteer litter pick for our members of staff, allowing us to get out in our local area of the Chalfont’s and clean up our environment.
Looking to the future, we are aiming to develop green savings and mortgage products that provide options to our Members to help them reduce their climate impact. We are also investigating local initiatives that would help us to make a difference in our community.
We know we have a long way to go, but we are all fully committed to working towards the ‘Greater Good’ and prepared to make the necessary changes to the way we work for a greener, healthier planet.
